The ABC Radio National Health Report over the weekend featured PCCS CEO, A/Prof JR Baker together with one of our clients, Ilia, in a segment (available at this link) underscoring the essential reasons why more Australians across the nation need to be able to access Social Prescribing programs, enhancing their wellbeing and quality of life. It was also a demonstration of the great work being done through PCCS and our program funders via Skillness/WellTogether and difference being made in enhancing wellbeing whilst developing skills and fostering social connection.
The conversation explored how social prescribing serves as a catalyst for shifting health care from managing sickness to preventative health, enhancing individuals’ quality of life whilst alleviating the strain on health care systems, and embodying a genuine person-centred approach to wellbeing.
A highlight of the conversation was the inspiring story of one of our Gold Coast based Skillness Group participants who was deeply impacted by social prescribing, highlighting the important role of social prescribing in building connections and developing skills. This further reinforces our philosophy that social prescribing extends beyond simple community group participation—it’s about meaningful engagement that enriches lives.
The interview also covered some of the key elements of the Australian Social Prescribing Institute of Research and Education’s (ASPIRE) recent budget submission, which advocates for the increased coverage and integration of social prescribing within our national health framework. Our proposal includes establishing a social care plan as a Medicare item to empower health providers to have conversations about social needs, underscores the necessity for comprehensive workforce development, and supports increased funding for PHNs to continue to commission social prescribing. This strategy leverages existing low-cost and no-cost opportunities, aspiring to expand access for all Australians and foster a society where everyone has the potential to thrive in health, happiness, and quality of life.
We also had the chance to set the scene for the upcoming National Accelerating Social Prescribing Roundtable hosted by ASPIRE. This significant event is set to advance strategies for policy development and the efficient and effective national expansion of social prescribing. It represents a collective effort to amplify the impact of social prescribing across Australia and is an exciting reminder of the great work that PCCS and ASPIRE have done over the years.
